Dr. Murugan is a board certified anatomic pathologist whose area of expertise is in the surgical pathology of genitourinary and bone / soft tissue tumors. He works closely with multidisciplinary teams involving urologists, orthopedicians, medical/radiation oncologists, and radiologists in providing care to patients with kidney, urinary bIadder, prostate, adrenal, testis, bone and soft tissue neoplasms. His role involves establishing accurate tissue diagnosis on biopsies and surgical excisions, a critical component in guiding treatment decisions.

In addition to his clinical diagnostic activities, Dr. Murugan is involved in medical student, resident and fellow education as well as translational research. His research projects mainly focus on the histomorphological features of neoplastic entities and their immunohistochemical and molecular profiles. He correlates these findings with tumor behavior in relevance to therapy and prognosis. He has published more than 30 peer reviewed journal articles and is currently working on several projects including studies addressing bladder cancer biomarkers, MRI guided prostate cancer detection, bladder cancer prognostication using cell cycle gene expression, radiation response in myxoid liposarcoma, low grade prostate cancer in African-American men and clinical markers of heterocyclic aromatic amines for human biomonitoring. He serves as peer-reviewer for several journals including Journal of Urology, BMC Cancer, Virchows Archiv and Human Pathology.
