Des Burke passed away

We lost an emeritus faculty member recently.  Des Burke was one of a number of graduates of the National University of Ireland School of Medicine in Galway who contributed to our pathology teaching programs.  He completed a fellowship in clinical pathology here at the U of M (he overlapped in training with John Crosson) and for fifteen years was an adjunct professor at the U and pathologist at Mt. Sinai Hospital.  Crosson points out that Burke, along with Pat Ward and Chuck Horwitz, established the laboratory medicine course at the Medical School.  Burke moved on to an academic career first at SUNY Stony Brook and later as vice-chair of pathology at the Cornell Medical Center.
